The old “survivor” trees in this work are puriri, actually from the forest surrounding the historic Ruapekapeka Pa. The puriri form a cathedral arch/window through which we go back in time to an idyllic, primeval landform in the distance. The island is just off the coast at Mimiwhangata. Mimi is a wonderful place, where lone puriri stand battered and ravaged by wind and possums, but they survive and prevail.
